Clarity comes before completeness
Our aim is to turn a standard 17-character VIN into useful, readable information. We show available manufacturer details, explain the VIN’s structure, and connect relevant public datasets when there is enough evidence to make a match.
An empty source field stays unavailable. We do not turn a missing value into a specification, infer a factory from a WMI assignment, or label a vehicle invalid simply because a U.S. database does not contain it. Lookup results distinguish incomplete data from a service that could not be reached.
Where the information comes from
| Source | Used for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC | VIN specifications and WMI records | Coverage depends on the manufacturer data available, particularly for non-U.S. vehicles. |
| NHTSA recalls | Campaigns for a make, model, and model year | A campaign match does not establish whether one VIN needs a repair. |
| NHTSA Safety Ratings | U.S. crash and rollover ratings | Ratings describe a tested vehicle variant; some vehicles are not rated. |
| FuelEconomy.gov | EPA fuel economy and emissions information | The correct engine, transmission, and drivetrain option must be selected. |
Built to accept international VINs
The input accepts standard 17-character VINs from all markets. U.S. public datasets are the main data sources, so detailed coverage varies. When no detailed data is returned, the WMI, VDS, and VIS breakdown can still be shown, with the limitations stated alongside it.
A model-year code or check-digit rule is only useful in its applicable context. We avoid treating U.S. conventions as a universal requirement for every vehicle.
Independent, free, and without an account
This website is an independent 4ool service. It is not an official U.S. government website and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NHTSA, the EPA, or a vehicle manufacturer. Links to official sources help you verify the underlying information.
No account is required. The site does not operate a VIN search-history database. Google AdSense advertising may help support the service; advertising does not change the vehicle data returned by the public sources. See the Privacy Policy for how browser lookups and advertising work.
